There is a time limit on the ebooks you check out. At that time the DRM prevents you from reading the book, effectively automatically checking it in for you. Many libraries allow you to vary this time between something like 3 - 21 days, so if you're a fast reader, you can shorten the time you check it out and then can check out new books.
I know that the
Fictionwise library is like that and I believe it is free if you're a member of their "Buywise Club" (cost is $29.95 for one year or you can reduce the annual rate by buying multiyear membership). The Buywise Club also gets you discounts on purchasing Fictionwise books as well. There are some
