You removed the font files (OTF,TTF)?

in the CSS (or inline) there are @font declarations, font-family:,font family name that matches the @font)

BTW the Modify epub plugin has an option to BLINDLY remove embedded fonts. AKA All or not. This does clean up the @font as well (it does not mention the font-family, so it is possible that your device may have that and use it)
