That won't overcome the 'problem'
if Preferences>Behaviour->Use internal viewer for->PDF is unchecked then calibre should start the default handler (evince) when you view a PDF.

Sorry for the broken link. Your advice does not work for me. Calibre does not start the default handler when you view a PDF, instead it opens E-book viewer.
And yes you are right, restoring database did not help.
But i think we can close this thread, because it is clearly a ubuntu 17.10. Artful Aardvark (development branch) problem, demonstrated in the already well known link:
