As for the Apple lightning cables, I've not heard of a MiFi lightning cable causing a problem. I've always bought certified lightning cables.
The problem is that Benson Leung's original article has been quoted ad nauseum to suggest that all USB type C cables are bad. I've followed his reviews and, yes, he has mentioned several bad cables/manufacturers. There are bad cable manufacturers for almost every type of cable. Not to mention the occasional lemon from reputable manufacturers.

For the lightning cables, check Apple's article Identify counterfeit or uncertified Lightning connector accessories. And yes, I have seen iPhones/iPads damaged by bad lightning cables. Not to mention one cable that fried the cable end.
