I tried Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.14_nomax_install.bin after trying 5.8.10 hotfix. Same greyed out button.

And I did that procedure because no other options worked.
Thanks for the info. Would you be willing to do this test?

1. go into airplane mode on kindle ( makes the logs less cluttered )
1: plug into USB
2: put 'Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.14_5.8.10_install.bin' onto kindle.
3: eject kindle
4: wait a couple moments
5. from the home screen search for ';dm' ( this is the 'dump messages' command )
6. plug kindle back into usb.
7. look where you put the update, to see if it has been renamed to "update_<number>_<letters>.bin" , or if has been deleted.

If it has been deleted, which it sounds like, you can also ge the all_system_messages file that was created from step 4, and search in it for the 'Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.14_5.8.10_install.bin' filename.

That should tell us why it is being deleted on your device
