Once upon a time, it was included in the Amazon firmware.
They really didn't have to pull it, they could have sandbox'd it to keep us from 'mis-using' it.
I suppose just removing it from the build was cheaper and easier.
(The folks staffing Lab126 where not very sophisticated in embedded systems back in those days.)
And I have never understood why they don't export user storage via CIFS (that is the Windows file sharing system for our non-tech readers).
Both Mac and Linux (and bsd and ...) handle a CIFS export and it would be much simpler to maintain than the current, custom, way they have always done it.
