The mating orientation also depends on the board manufacturer getting the socket on the intended side of the board.
Nothing prevents them from putting a surface mount connector on the wrong surface.

I think at this point I have more non-standard cables than "standard" ones.
And yea, they do change using a "standard" cable because for example ones like the BB cable I mentioned can have the USB logo on the opposite side. If you follow your "standard" directions of USB logo up you'd be plugging it in wrong!
It's not really a standard if no one follows it.
