Yes, my recommendation of Dune was based on the first book only. Many love them all but to me, the first book was head and shoulders above the rest of the Dune series. And it was written as a complete story, not as if it was intended originally to be the 1st book of a series, such as the David Edding's Belgariad or W&H's Deathgate or Jordan's Wheel of Time series.
