EDIT: Alternatively I can import a section of information to the comments section, and if I can then find a way to copy information from the comments section to a user defined column that would work as well, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet either.
I use the GetFileName optional plugin to store the file name in a custom column. I then use the Search and Replace feature of Bulk Metadata Edit to pull it apart and save bits in other custom columns. The S&R feature includes regex facilities.

I shy away from re-purposing the built-in columns when adding books, sometimes I do (or I might at sometime) want to use them for their intended purposes.
