There are three "Paperwhite" models, and you do not mention which one has the problem.

So start off general -
Go to the Amazon page for that specific model of Kindle, download and install what is shown as the current firmware version (it will be 5.6.1.1 or 5.8.10 - depending on Paperwhite model).

If the current firmware also has the same problem, report back here.
And mention what model and what firmware version.

We use a set of nicknames here for the various models.
You can find out what your model is called here by using the first few characters of its serial number and this table:
