Apart from the great info given by barryem (don't discharge fully), there's only one more thing to add:
Batteries don't like heat. Especially when they are fully charged.
I'm not saying that you should keep the kindle in your freezer, but you shouldn't leave it plugged into a charger on the dash of a car for the entire summer.
(Leaving it in the sun for a couple of hours is not great, but it's not worth fussing about.)
