(*) If the sidecar information directory for the book is left behind, then the Kindle will not repeat the "new addition" processing and it will look as if the problem is un-changed regardless of what 'fix' is used.

Just wanted to say thanks and give some closure in case someone else runs into a similar issue.
I have covers showing up again. I found a book that was on the Kindle but Calibre said it was not on the device. I removed that book, plus the one book that was AZW plus reinstalled Calibre just for fun. This seemed to fix the issue. I have not tried to add those two books back into the Kindle yet.
Thanks for the help and very glad I didn't update my Kindle.
