AFAIK you'll need to downgrade your Kindle for PC app to a version that still downloads AZW, which is a single file. Try searching for 1.17. Uninstall whatever you currently have, install the older version in it's stead and keep hoping Amazon doesn't disallow repeating the above whenever they force a new update.

Edit: Others report being able to force more recent app versions to download AZW by disabling or removing "rendering-test.exe" from User\AppData\Local\Amazon\Kindle\application. You may want to try it first.
