Two history titles by Ernle Bradford have dropped to $1.99 at Kindle US (but not at Kobo US, at least as of now). I've not read either of these titles, but have read The Great Siege: Malta 1565, Thermopylae: The Battle for the West, and Gibraltar: The History of a Fortress, all by this author, and have enjoyed them all. These are Open Road titles, so the price drops will likely be short.

The life of the great military commander of ancient Carthage from the bestselling author of Thermopylae and Gibraltar.

Born in Carthage in 247 BC, Hannibal Barca is considered one of the greatest military commanders of all time. Following the example set by his father, Hamilcar, he dedicated his life to the defeat of Rome. At the outbreak of the Second Punic War, Hannibal famously led an army across the Pyrenees and the Alps to victory against the Romans at the Battle of Trebia. In the years that followed, Hannibal led the Carthaginian war on Rome through some of the most brutal and costly battles in recorded history.

In this richly detailed biography, Ernle Bradford tells the story of a great leader whose military strategies have been studied and copied by commanders throughout history, from his own Roman enemies to Napoleon Bonaparte.

The Shield and the Sword

Few historians immersed themselves in their topics like bestselling, noted author Ernle Bradford. Specializing in the Mediterranean world and naval topics, Bradford was an enthusiastic sailor himself and spent almost thirty years sailing the Mediterranean, where many of his acclaimed books are set. He served in the Royal Navy during World War II, finishing as the first lieutenant of a destroyer, and afterward worked as an editor and correspondent for the BBC.

Now, his engaging series of military histories is available to a new generation of readers. Bradford brings you the storied history of the Knights of St. John—defenders of the poor and sick. Starting with the founding of the Knights during the crusades, Bradford follows the Order for centuries as they move around the world, surviving being uprooted from Jerusalem, Rhodes, and Malta. The military prowess of the order culminates in the stirring victory over the Turks depicted in the bestselling The Great Siege. But after two hundred years, internal corruption contributes to the Knights’ loss of Malta to Napoleon. But even from those ashes, the Knights rise once again.
