I like a mixture of short, medium and long sentences. If the long sentences don't carry enough sustenance, or weight, or meaningfulness, and don't advance the story, then I'm unable to enjoy the book. Then I stand by my recommendation for the Goblin Trilogy by Jaq D. Hawkins. If you like to get right into action, you can start with the second book and not feel lost. The first one is heavy on exposition and world building.
