The Kindle Paperwhite has a
frontlight, as do all illuminated eInk devices. Frontlights can't be used on large screens, because they (obviously!) require a light diffuser to spread the light across the screen, and light diffusers have a limit as to how large they can be. They work well on 6" screens, moderately well on 8" screens, very poorly on 9.7" screens, and nobody's even attempted to use one on a 13.3" screen.
