You could do an epub-to-epub conversion with Calibre, which will automatically convert epub3 books to epub2 books.
However, this process will add Calibre styles and metadata.

I never had any problems with epub3 books. What specific problems did you encounter?

If you want to edit an epub3 book that someone has accidentally saved as an epub2 book, exporting it as an epub3 book with Sigil will usually fix most of these errors.
