My guess is that the "secured" network is enforcing guest mode, wireless isolation, or SSID isolation. It also might be refusing to pass packets between bands or to the cabled network. It also might has some kind of IP-level access control.

I can guarantee you that neither CC nor calibre care what WiFi protocol or band is being used.
