If you're in the US and feel like taking a chance, Sony readers can be had secondhand for pretty cheap. You never know if you're going to get one with a good battery and how long that battery will last though. I've bought most of my Sonys secondhand and have had great luck with them having good batteries.
A Kobo is the next best thing but no page turn buttons on them. I tired one and didn't like that so I went back to Sonys.
