The Kindle app on my HD6 is slow. It is even slower on my Moto G (1st gen). But both of these are 3-4 years old, and have only 1GB RAM. It's my impression that they are significantly slower running the current software than they were 3 years ago. That's pretty much to be expected and I would not really have it any other way, since the features they have added are of value to me. One a book is open, I would say it is acceptable performance. At the same time I have other devices I prefer to use, largely because the performance is better.
My Fire Phone has 2GB RAM but they have not updated the Kindle app for 3 years so while it is not particularly slow, it doesn't have enhanced typography and associated features that I have come to expect, so I don't read with it very much (I will be getting an iPhone very soon, and consider that will become my 'primary' reading device in short order).
I just bought (not yet arrived) a new Fire HD 8 for $49.99 on Prime Day. I got Punch Red, because that is obviously the fastest color one can get. It has 1.5GB RAM. I certainly expect it to be significantly faster, and to have better power management. If this pans out, I think it will make it into my reading device rotation.
The iOS app is generally very snappy by comparison. But of course these devices cost more.
