Personal opinion is some of the later books were better reads but you needed the foundation given by Naked In Death to better understand Eve and Roarke's history. Admittedly, I got hooked on the series reading my wife's copies -- when I run out of my books to read, I'll read damn near anything printed. Samuel C. Russell from Heinlein's Have Space Suit - Will Travel was my early hero in that respect.
