Since Nougat you do want more space because updates will be done in a separate partition. When everything is ready you reboot and the partition with the update will become active. I'm not sure exactly what you're saying--are you talking about updates to Android, or to apps in general?--but both of these have Nougat. The Moto G has 7.0 and the Moto E has 7.1.
