I copied it over again using finder. The copy completes, I see the bin file in the root directory at same level as "documents". I eject the kindle and unplug. In step #3 it says I can validate the bin file with the txt file. How would I do that? Don't understand that one at all.

You are running a firmware version 5.8.8.x or 5.8.9.x
Check the "Device Info" panel under 'Settings' menu.
The "initial_factory_*.bin" files are not model locked, even if you had the wrong file for your model, it would let you (attempt) to install it.
