It's simples! At least on my Paperwhite 2, to know where you are in the book:
Touch the top of the screen, so that all the icons show: at the bottom of the screen you'll see "loc 2000 of 4000" or something like that. With a finger, stroke the screen bottom upwards and a bar will appear (your current page is saved in the background and shown again as a smaller box which you can rifle through). The bar graphically indicates how far through the book you are. Just tap on the background to return to normal.
