I've been using a very basic messenger app called "SMS Composer" which displays messages as Sent or Inbox, like an old flip phone. My phone is running Android 6.0.1. You probably wouldn't want this app, though, because it was last updated in 2011!

The most annoying thing about this app for me is that it will only display my contact list by first name (I like them sorted by last name). As I recall, on my old flip phone I had entered all my contacts names backwards so that they would show up last name first. Haven't bothered to do that on my current smartphone because it's fairly easy to find a name by either typing the first letter or two of the contact's first name into the search box.
