I had missed the significance of the E Ink display not being on the Fire and other color display models. I looked at a wiki page for E Ink and led me to another wiki page that lists the kindle models better:

This page divides the Kindle model listings into two groups, one for E Ink models and one for LCD models and that eliminates a lot of confusion for me:

So I know I probably want to consider the later generation devices that do not have color displays to get the same type and quality of display am seeing now. I really don't have a need for a color display, I just thought it was characteristic of all of the later models.
