Also, in the past at least, author/title participation would vary over the time of the sale, so it doesn't hurt to keep a bit of an eye on it if there are some Smashwords authors whose titles you want...

True. Some books are always being taken off the sales floor and sometimes one book in a series is offered free but the others aren't at that sale but then down the road the others are offered free or at reduced price. And there are always new books coming out that are promoted during the sales. I think one of the best parts is if you buy a given book (when it's free) from an author you haven't tried yet and find you don't enjoy their writing style or whatever you really haven't lost anything (save perhaps for a few moments of time when you were reading the story that you didn't enjoy). On the other hand you also get the chance to read something that may lead you to buy additional titles from a new author down the road. A true win-win situation.
