My portable bluetooth speaker's instructions specifically mentioned not leaving it plugged in while in use. And me being a stickler for rules; I of course immediately ignored that caveat.

The problem is ... it still goes dead if I leave it plugged in, turned on , and linked to the Dot. It remains dead in the water until I turn it off and let it charge. Other than that, I love the thing for music on the go.
I don't want to physically plug the dot into a speaker because I like having the Dot on the side of the room where I'm sitting, and the speaker on the other (with the TV/entertainment center).
So why are all the home, powered bluetooth speakers that I'm craving so expensive in the first place? How hard could it be to manufacture a portable-type unit without the rechargeable battery?
This is in the ballpark, but it's still a bit too pricey for me (and I'm not in love with the guitar amp look). I never dreamed what I wanted would be such a luxury item. *shrug*
