Direct Calibre sync with a Kindle Voyager.

#1 Being Kindles UI & library management truly sucks and is worthless, I strongly suggest letting Calibre take that over. With over 500 active books loaded, I have little idea what has been read or not read - even using collections. My original 10-year-old iPad did a better job managing books than any of my 5 Kindles.

#2 Because Kindle is not waterproof, I will probably move to a different but waterproof reader(s). That said, the need to remove DRM. Probably using my already installed DeDRM by Apprentice, a global way to take all Amazon books with me.

Granted finding a way to bootleg Whisper Sync or another method to get into Kindle will be tough. Coming from a paid contributor to Calibre, and familiar with SW development, I am happy to assist and beta test.
