I am working on Christopher and Columbus by Elizabeth Arnim, published in 1919 for the MR library. There is a section in which one adolescent female twin talks to the other about their uncle who has died and gone to heaven. She says

when one thought of Onkel Col going to heaven, which was surely of all places the most endimanché.

She had earlier said that he could not have taken his money or clothes with him.

I understood endimanché to mean something like 'dressed up in one's Sunday best' and don't understand how to translate the word here.
