XDG_DATA_DIRS= works fine, though you will first have to create some directories by hand because xdg-utils is a very buggy collection of tools.

This is... actually a very good point. I'm not entirely convinced it is reasonable to remove the more discoverable option away, and I don't understand the justification of removing one and not the other, but... so be it.
