Looking at the 2nd picture I'd say broken substrate. If you look at the lines just above the info box, on the right side of the screen they stop and it appears there is faint diagonal line from above right to below and left of this point. If those lines continued right across to the right side I'd agree with controller issue.
The device might not have been dropped, but IMHO it's slight twisting of the device that is more likely to be the cause of a broken substrate.
