They're out! Here are the July 2017 Samsung Book Deals selections from the Samsung for Kindle app (in the order in which Amazon presented them). I researched them a bit, to identify series (if any) each belongs to and its genre(s).

Author Michael Wallace doesn’t mess around. No matter the setting of his novels, he mercilessly drops his characters into dire situations with high stakes. Crow Hollow is no exception. Set in the seventeenth century, this mystery pairs Prudence Cotton, a young Puritan widow who’s still reeling from the brutal murder of her husband and the kidnapping of her daughter, with James Bailey, a British agent sent to investigate those crimes. The unlikely duo sets out on a harrowing course through the cold and forbidding New England countryside in search of Prudence’s daughter. Theirs is a mission fraught with peril, as the battles between the colonists, the British, and the Native Americans have left villages scorched and families torn apart.

And yet, despite the grim setting and circumstances, I found myself chuckling at, and with, Prudence and James. While Michael clearly prefers dark places, he has a gift for infusing his characters with humor, and he delights in their idiosyncrasies. Prudence and James bicker and connive; they are a bit lusty—and entirely fallible. As these two characters make their way through the wilderness, their humanity stands in stark contrast to the ruins of a devastating war. In this way, Michael plays with dark and light, tweaking our noses right when we start to feel too righteous, never letting us forget that no one, and nothing, is entirely good or bad.

When high-level governmental programmer Sam Steele is called into his office on his day off, he quickly finds himself at the center of a battle for humanity itself. An alien entity is heading straight for Earth, and an elite team of specialists has been assembled to attempt to make first contact. But despite Steele’s expertise, Colonel Eric Web, his superior and longtime thorn in his side, makes it clear he doesn’t want him there.

The aliens that arrive represent a long-dead race and say they’ve come to help humans defend themselves against an imminent threat, but their help will come with a price. Now the future of humanity hangs in the balance between two men: Web, the regimented, hubristic military man, and Steele, a brilliant man broken by loss and tragedy.

As the team races the clock to try to divine their visitors’ complex instructions, they struggle with infighting and, ultimately, the question of what it means to be human.
