The View plugin (built in) doesn't have any configuration. If there was an option to define the default action for View button click, that's where I would expect to find it. Maybe Kovid would consider adding it.
You could take the keyboard shortcut 'V' away from 'View' and give it to 'View specific format', as I have done, viz:

View->View specific format to the
Favourites Menu - optional plugin - that may suit your wife better.
