This is what I do:

I create a custom column called Shelf.

In that column, you add in whatever text values you want: read, to-read, dnf, backlog, dont-touch, etc. So then you'll have a shelf that's read, a shelf that's to-read, a shelf that's did not finish, and etc.

This means that you'll probably have to go through each of your books add those values to each of them.

Then go to Calibre > Preferences > Look & Feel > Column coloring
In Column coloring, add rules to highlight a title entry for a certain color based on the shelf value.

Example rule for read shelf:
Set the color of the column "All columns" to "#55aa00" (hex code for green color),
If the "Shelf" column has values "read"

Restart calibre and calibre will make any book titles that has "read" value in the shelf column to green.

Add different colors for different shelf values. Ditto.
