I am using a VM to run ADE in which means I can now purchase books from Amazon or any of the vendors that use Adobe DRM (Kobo, Google play etc.), strip the DRM in Calibre on Linix and load the book onto the reader of my choice.

Great. I'm glad you found a solution.
Note that I said Sony's reader software can be used as a generic ADE "device" in case you want to try that some day down the road

It of course works with Kobo natively (as Sony sold their reader customers to Kobo) and generic acsm files are no problem either.
