Maybe it wasn't very clear, but I wrote that the Kindle 3 was the last to have "open" web access. New models have 3G that is limited to only a few sites, like Amazon and Wikipedia. I use mine for Gmail and news sites when I am in the country without internet. At some point, I'll no doubt have to purchase a portable 3G router, but that will cost about $20 a month with connection and SIM card charges.
