You made a great point.

I looked up the beginning dates of both kinds of football, as I thought that I might have a valid argument there. Lost again. It appears that soccer football started about 1863, and American football started in about 1869.

Maybe American football should change it's name to "armball" since, as you mentioned soccer involves contact with the ball much more than American football. There is much, much use of arms in American football. And the mouth, in trash talk.
