For simple images with lots of single color areas a GIF is very good. PNG can be a pain sometimes and it more complicated to use. Nothing else is as good that those two with compression. Certainly not JPG which does terrible at large areas of a single color.
GIF got a bad name due to copyright but that is all over now.
