You need to provide more information about how you expect to connect, and what reading app you want to use.

Apple iOS devices have not been able to make a successful connection to Calibre via USB for some time (since around the introduction of iOS 8 I think). This is due to the way that Apple locks down devices.

The only way to connect is via WiFi. To do that you need an appropriate app on the iPad that connects to the Calibre server (or an equivalent). I personally use the Marvin app connected to a Calibre2opds generated catalog that I host on my NAS, although I can also connect to the Calibre server on my PC if I want to.
