HDTV in the US refers to the 720p and 1080i/p formats of the ATSC DTV standards. It's the ATSC's standard, their term, and their definition.
I know there is a vocal bunch who chooses to reject our reality and substitute their own. I remember "If it ain't a million pixels, it ain't High Def" being a rallying cry for a while.
