This sounds to me like a browser or OS setting might be causing this. You don't by chance happen to be using Edge with the newest version of Windows 10 do you? MS has added ePub integration to their browser which I could see causing something like this. There is probably a way to turn this behavior off I'd guess, or you could maybe try a different browser.

That was is - thank you so much. I was using Edge with the newest version of Windows 10 since May 13. Downloading with Firefox worked fine. I had bought kobo books in the interval, but with DRM, and the .asc files were no problem.
I'll try to change Edge's behaviour, but I've had no success opening PDF files in Acrobat instead of the default Microsoft photo app - ridiculous.
