problems downloading a book with no DRM bought on Kobo

I buy books on the Kobo site fairly often, last time June 5, and I usually have no problem with download: I choose where to download the .acsm file, open it with the Sony Reader app (I haven't been able to use the Adobe reader for opening DRMed books for years), and I find the book in my documents.

The book I bought today has no DRM, and when I click on the Download button, that just opens the book to read it on my PC, which is NOT what I want. Anybody had this problem? Is there a solution?

I refuse to sync books with the desktop app: I want epubs I can format to my requirements and manage with Calibre before sending them as kepubs to my reader. I hate too that I have to delete all already downloaded books from the Kobo site beforehand, to not have them dumped into my reader.

I also refuse to subscribe to Facebook, and from what I've read on this forum, this seems to be the only way to get decent customer service. If I need to go through the hassle of mails and/or phone calls to be able to read the book I bought, I will never ever buy books from Kobo again.

The beauty of digital is immediate wish fulfilling: see book I want, buy book, read book. Go Kobo for making that a hassle rich painful lengthy process!
