I think that's more what people mean by walled garden, but I could be wrong.
Although I'm not planning on getting one, I am curious if HomePod requires another Apple device for setup. That would be somewhat along the lines of what I think of as the walled garden.

Yes, the HomePod literature (so far) says it's easy to set up, all you have to do is place your iPhone next to it, and it sets itself up. So if I want a HomePod (I don't) I'll need to get an iPhone (I won't) in order to set it up.
It's hard to understand why Apple would limit itself to less than half of all smart phone users. Do they really think people will go out and buy iPhones just to set up their speakers when they can connect external speakers of any quality/price to a fifty dollar Dot.
Walled Garden indeed!
