The purpose of launching nickel once by selecting "start nickel no fmon.sh" is to give nickel a chance to produce the thumbnails of the exit_nickel.png and other KSM pngs, so that next time you can launch nickel by selecting "start nickel" without unintentionally triggering fmon.
