Actually, a reading list can be based on a search. And it can update a field when a book is added or removed. And you create ones that populate automatically when the device is plugged in.

@RBraverman: The Reading List plugin fits well with your use. One of my uses is to have a reading list for each device. This is set to automatically send books on the at list to the device when it is seen. When I add a new book, I decide which devices it should go to and add it to the appropriate lists. The next time I connect that device, the books go to it and the list is cleared.
