I was so excited about the idea of the Kindle, but the original design seemed really unfortunate. Even though the cost of the device really boiled down to its components (e-ink and the original device's SD slot are expensive!), the novelty of the item plus the price of the item pushed it into a "boutique" shopping category for me. I wouldn't pay that much for something unless a) I desperately needed it despite how it looked, or b) it had a nice design that was a joy to use. Seeing as I can read a beautiful paper book any time I want, the former certainly didn't apply. But now that Kindle 2 is out, so are my reservations, and I'm so excited! In my mind, the Kindle 2 isn't about fashion, it's more about the concept of "zakka" -- how items you integrate into your daily life should be beautiful, because it brings you personal joy.
