In public school as a child I lived in a small rural town so all the teachers knew to call me Jack when they called roll. But when I went off the college at Texas A&M the professors would use my first name when calling roll. I hardly ever heard my name Ceburn used when I was growing up as neither my dad nor myself used that name. So the professors would call my name and sometimes I wouldn't immediately recognize that they were calling to me. Finally, it would sink in and I would answer back.
In college first day, I knew when they got to me because it was last name, last name, last name, then eventually "Cindy how do you pronounce your last name?"
About 4 years later another of my last name enrolled. (No relation). They would pronounce his name right and then ask is Cindy your mom or do you know Cindy.
