Since my device started acting up yesterday (some user apps suddenly didn't work anymore) I bit the bullet and completely reflashed my kepler using the Mfg Tool (

Worked like a charm (though it also resets language to Chinese, so you have to be able to navigate blindly to the language settings), updated to V1.8.2 afterwards and all is fine. My strange display problems when updating firmwares is also gone. So as expected, the Mfg Tool really completely resets your device.
