In the code all the messages are given in English, and these messages are translated on the fly when you choose another language. That means that it is the length of the English strings that is important. That means if you do it by the patching method as provided here.

The other method would be to overwrite the entries in the translation file (see the link posted by Oren64). This method has the advantage that you are not so strictly limited to a certain length of the string, and this solution will work on your device without reapplying it until Kobo changes the English string.

Edit: The method with the translation file can also be use for English, since the (English) message strings of the program code are also "translated" on the fly into English.
